Hutong tells the story of three generations of women in Beijing, highlighting their dedication to serving their neighborhood from the 1950s to today. Through their experiences, the book captures the changing spirit of youth and showcases the rich culture of Beijing’s hutongs.
Tian Zao begins her journey as a community leader in the early days of liberation, working on projects like literacy campaigns, catching spies, and supporting the volunteer army. Even after retirement, she continues to inspire her daughter to carry on her work. By the 21st century, Tian Zao’s granddaughter steps up as the new leader of the neighborhood committee, continuing the family’s tradition of service.
